Tuesday Afternoon Linebacker

Florida State, the once mighty king of college football is now an also-ran. They’ve been beaten every which way you can imagine. And not just by the insanely talented Gator teams of the last five years. But the proportionally mediocre squads of the ACC have had their way with the Noles as well. I just can’t figure out why FSU has been this bad for this long. They recruit the same guys as Florida, they play in a weaker conference, and they have a legend at head coach. There will be down years for sure, but they have at least one, if not two, full classes of players that have been nothing but ordinary. Could it simply be the coach? Could the grand old man be hampering the team more than helping? I’ve said as much in the past, but unless and until he decides to hand the reins over to Jimbo, I think the ‘Noles are in for a lot more futility than glory.

Hey there. How’s it been going? Me, same old. What’s that? Oh… yeah it’s not that kind of blog. Today, let’s talk about the playoffs. Both of the pro and “armature” variety. The NFL is looking (finally) to resolve the old problem of having bad division winners at home against good wild-cards. And, lo and behold, the NCAA may actually consider talking about looking into a Division I-A playoff. (more…)

The media focus this week in the NFL is on the two future hall-of-famers under center, and their destiny to face each other at UoP Stadium. But the thing TALB wants to know is, can the immortal Billy Volek step-up and take his team to the promised land? Is he going to get the chance? That’s the question the NFL is asking of this year’s playoff field. Which, I think, is quite apropos this season. The teams that have been playing to win since September are still alive. Those that took some time off, not so much. (more…)

This week is when the rubber meets the road in the NFL playoffs. The top dogs have had a week off (or in some cases two), and the wild cards have had to scrap their way to this point. The safe money says pick the home teams. And statistically you’d be right. But I’m not so sure that’s the case in the NFC. (more…)

Hopefully the Bucs got a load of Forever stamps a few months back, as they’ve been mailing it in for a month. And it showed Sunday afternoon. The Bucs looked like a team that shouldn’t be in the playoffs. And maybe they shouldn’t have. But rules are rules, and they got to self-destruct in front of the entirety of the NFL-watching public.
